We provide professional training to mental health professionals in Brainspotting®, a 21st century therapy, which is one of the increasing number of brain-based therapies, that go beyond the mind to gain direct access to the brain. It is hypothesised that Brainspotting accesses the sub-cortical brain directly through the visual field.
Brain-based therapies are the fastest growing field of psychological health because of their proven ability to address issues that talk therapy can take years to heal.
Dr David Grand has combined the strengths of both brain-based therapy and the importance of the relationship between the client and the therapist from talk therapy into a powerful technique he calls Brainspotting® which is a brain based relational therapy.
The motto of Brainspotting® is, “Where you look affects how you feel.”
When this man thinks of something this is upsetting for him, the intensity of his upset varies according to where he positions his eyes. Looking straight ahead makes the issue feels more intense and looking up results in a decrease in intensity.
Amazingly, the intensity also varies if he closes one eye and looks through just one at a time. We often find that the issue feels much worse when looking through one eye than the other.
The eye which is more “resourcing” is not always the same, but this varies also from issue to issue, which makes Brainspotting very different to Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP.
What Brainspotting® is, put simply……
If something is bothering you, how you feel about it changes, depending on whether your eyes look left, right, up or down.
It also feels differently – stronger or weaker, if you close one eye and look out of one eye only.
Your eyes and your brain are intricately connected and signals sent from your eyes are processed deep within your sub-cortical brain. That is the part of your brain underneath your cortex or thinking brain.
Your brain then directs where to focus your eyes from moment to moment.
Trauma can overwhelm the brain’s processing capacity leaving behind pieces of the trauma, frozen in an unprocessed state. Brainspotting® uses your field of vision to find where you are holding pieces of the trauma in your brain. Your eyes can actually scan inside your brain as well as outside!
Brainspotting® uses this inner scanning ability of your eyes and brain to identify an external spot in your field of vision and while you focus on it, your brain begins to naturally release and resolve the frozen pieces of your unprocessed trauma.
